What changed in 2026
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. What remains are state-run federal rebates where a state has launched them, utility rebates and manufacturer promotions. In June 2026 the Department of Energy renamed the federal programs (HEAR is now the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate, HEEHR) and stopped paying for switching from gas, oil or propane to a heat pump: HEEHR heat pump rebates now cover replacing electric equipment, or new construction. Savings-based HOMES rebates can still help a home that heats with gas.
Federal rebates run by the state
Rhode Island has launched its federally funded home energy rebates. Under the June 2026 rules, electric-home rebates (HEEHR) pay up to $8,000 toward a heat pump that replaces electric heating, covering up to 100% of cost below 80% of area median income and up to 50% between 80% and 150%. Switching from gas, oil or propane no longer qualifies; check the state program for what it funds now.
States are reworking their programs to the June 2026 federal rules, so a program listed here may have paused or changed what it pays for. Confirm with the state before you count on a rebate.
